Up to 20 million litres of toxins are leaching into Ontario soil each year because governments of all stripes have failed to regulate automobile recycling, a coalition of groups said Wednesday.
The groups are pushing for new government rules enforcing the responsible collection of a range of products in cars headed for the scrap heap. The materials include fluids like gasoline, engine and transmission oils, coolant, glycols in windshield washer, heavy metals like mercury and lead, freon, tires and battery acid. An estimated 500,000 to 600,000 automobiles are sent to the scrap yard each year in Ontario. Only one in three of them is decommissioned under voluntary industry guidelines. Vcommindia News
