Government is criticized by Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai , Toyota and Mercedes for not having clarity on its stand over the pricing of diesel

Top major car companies like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Toyota and Mercedes have criticized the government for not being clear about its position on the price of diesel. According to them this uncertainty was hurting the investment plans and sales. While some sectors within the government have called for the deregulation of fuel prices to ensure that car owners do not get to enjoy government subsidies on diesel, others have demanded that excise taxes on vehicles and other diesel should rise to offset the subsidy.

"We do not know what to do," says Maruti Suzuki chairman R C Bhargava. He further added that the wide price differential between petrol and diesel had resulted in a huge spurt in demand for diesel vehicles. "However, since the government's future direction on the matter is not clear, we are not sure how much should we invest in diesel engine technology."Vcommindia News
