Volvo intends to dump their five and six-cylinder heavy-duty engines to make way for smaller three and four cylinders. The Swedish auto manufacturer is pursuing this plan to meet stringent emission standards in all developed countries. The movement expected to be achieved by 2013, was inspired by giants like BMW and Ford cars, which boast with its three-cylinder turbo diesel and EcoBoost range of powerful, efficient fuel injection and low direct emissions, turbocharged gasoline engines, respectively. The company is taking its technological future in their hands. Volvo has been pointed out plans to be on par or even beat their toughest competitors in key areas such as driving dynamics and fuel economy of its new architecture and smaller engines.The advance engines are expected to be almost 90 kg lighter. Efficiency of these engines are more fuel efficient than the five and six cylinder engines. The three and four cylinder engines could get hybrid power of Volvo’s hybrid engine technology as a supplement. Volvo V70 Diesel Hybrid is one of the first commercially available diesel hybrid cars in the world. Volvo may also go by the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), an excellent engine technology used in Formula1.
