BMW AG which is a German luxury car maker Indian subsidiary BMW India has been on a roll in Indian market for the last couple of years and the company has also overtaken its German rival Mercedes-Benz to take the top slot in luxury car market. Presently, BMW has rolled out 20,000th vehicle from its Chennai plant. Juergen Eder, Managing Director, BMW Plant Chennai was present when the 20,000th car rolled out from the assembly line at the plant. It has its headquarters in Gurgaon (National Capital Region), BMW India is a 100 percent subsidiary of the BMW Group. The company mentioned till date that it has invested 1.8 billion Rupees. The wide range of BMW activities in India include the establishment of a production plant in Chennai, parts warehouse in Mumbai and development of a dealer organisation across major metropolitan centres of the country. Company reports that the Chennai plant is producing BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series and the BMW X1 in petrol and diesel variants. The new BMW X3 is produced in diesel variants. The BMW Plant Chennai has the capacity to produce 11,000 units per year on a double shift basis. The total number of employees at BMW India is 650. Up to 1200 jobs will be created in the dealer and service. Currently, BMW India is present at 25 locations in the Indian market. By end of 2012, BMW India will aggressively expand its dealer network by increasing the number of outlets to 40 across major metropolitan centers and emerging markets in India.
