The American automobile major General Motors has reportedly announced that it restarted production of the hybrid electric Chevy Volt, although all new 2012 Volts are being delivered to California dealers where the vehicle qualifies for a $1,500 rebate from the state.
According to reports, the new Chevy Volts have been modified with a steel structural reinforcement surrounding the battery module and new sensors and are said to conform to changes recommended by its engineers in conjunction with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). The modifications to the Volt were deemed necessary after the NHTSA identified the potential for a fire to occur in the battery module in crash testing last year.
According to reports, GM's decision to ship all new models to California likely stems from concerns about publicity regarding the vehicle's safety after the potential fire issue was discovered.
