With the end of the year 2011 Volkswagen India finished up with a 140% sales growth compared to 2010. The company sold 78,408 cars across the country with the Volkswagen Polo and Vento accounting for a sizeable chunk of the sales. The company also expanded its dealership network from 70 to 101 in 2011.
The positive sales growth has given the German car giant the confidence to set up its used car business, Das WeltAuto in India. The used-car market in India is gaining a lot of momentum and car makers are increasingly setting up their pre-owned car ventures to cash in on the interest. Maruti Suzuki kicked off the pre-owned car business with its True-Value, currently Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Hyundai, Toyota, Tata,Chevrolet and Honda operate their pre-owned car business in India.
By setting up its pre-owned car business in India, Volkswagen aims to increase the re-sale value of their cars in India as well as set up a standard layout of inspecting and certifying a used Volkswagen to customers.
Neeraj Garg, Member of Board and Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Group Sales India, said, “With a healthy customer base and a strong network established in the market over the last couple of years, it has encouraged us to bring in our global pre-owned car business into the country. We are confident that Das WeltAuto will chart out its own success story in this market very soon.”
Volkswagen India intends to launch its initial phase of operations in India in the first half of 2012. Considering that the company has been here in India for only a couple of years now owners are just beginning to sell their cars which makes this a very good time to get a hold of the used car scenario of Volkswagen cars in India.
