Mercedes-Benz India invited us at their Chakan plant to get a feel of the plant. Also, we were given an opportunity to interact with Mr. Peter Honegg (Managing Director & CEO Mercedes-Benz India) as well as Mr. Debashish Mitra (Director, Sales & Marketing, Mercedes-Benz India) along with some other important members of the company.
Mr. Peter Honegg had the above stand, when asked about the Merc’s next offering, the B Class. This car will be a “Clever’ offering from the Benz stable. Pioneering different segments in the luxury bracket has always been the forte of Mercedes Benz and the B Class will continue the same tradition.
It will be India’s first Sports-Tourer. Though, it would be the most affordable Mercedes for India, It will not be targeted as the best value for money proposition. Offering the best of luxury available would be the theme behind this model.
The Mercedes Benz B Class would be very tentatively priced at less than Rs.25Lakhs. It will not be fighting for existence with the big dominant SUVs of the segment instead it would carve its own space. This space would consist of those who wish to have their second luxury car in addition to their premium car, then there would be those who wish to upgrade from their existing premium sedans to the 3-pointed star.
SUVs have been dominating the Rs.20Lakh and above segment, which is something that the German car maker knows and instead of debating on it, they would be offering something from their own stable as confirmed by Mr. Honegg.
Mercedes Benz is very convinced about the B Class and is sure that the B Class would set a new benchmark for its rivals to follow. The B Class would also be the first of a new generation of clever models on the same price segment.
